WORLD NOW

  • 2.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services, such as toilets or latrines
  • Each day, nearly 1,000 children die due to preventable water and sanitation-related diarrhoeal diseases
  • Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the global population and is projected to rise, due to the effects of climate change
  • By 2050 at least one in four people are likely to be affected by recurring water shortages
  • Hydropower is the most important and widelyused renewable source of energy and as of 2011, represented 16 per cent of total electricity production worldwid

WORLD 2030

GOAL: ENSURE ACCESS TO WATER AND SANITATION FOR ALL

  • Universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water achieved for all
  • Access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene achieved for all, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations; and ended open defecation
  • Water quality significantly improved by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally
  • Water-use efficiency across all sectors is substantially increased, and ensured are sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity
  • Integrated management of water resources at all levels, through transboundary cooperation as appropriate
  • Water-related ecosystems are protected and restored, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes

HOW?

  • Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management
  • Expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies
